Corwin's Notes

===== NGC 7594 = IC 1478. The confusion arose because Ainslie Common's position is none too good. His description, however, pinpoints the galaxy: "Faint, round, following 3 stars in a line [oriented at] 90 deg pointing to another fainter nebula south." The "fainter nebula south" is IC 5306 (which see; it was rediscovered by Kobold). I suspect that Dreyer did not include this in the NGC because of the lack of a position. That did not prevent him from including other poorly observed nebulae, however, so his decision remains a bit of a puzzle.

Steve's Notes

===== NGC 7594 17.5" (11/18/95): faint, small, elongated 2:1 ~N-S, 0.8'x0.4', broad weak concentration. The outer halo increases in size with averted vision. Brightest in a quartet (WBL 706) with IC's 5305, 5306, 5307. NGC 7594 is identified as IC 1478 in UGC, MCG, CGCG and RC3. IC 5305 is faint, very small, round, 15" diameter, weak concentration. Located 3.8' NNE of a mag 11.5 star and 1.9' W of NGC 7594. Collinear with two mag 14 stars 45" SSW and 1.4' SSW. IC 5306 is extremely faint and small, round, 15" diameter, low surface brightness. Collinear with IC 5305 3.4' NNW and two mag 14 stars 2.0' NNW and 2.7' NNW. IC 5307 is extremely faint and small, round, 15" diameter. Faintest of four in NGC 7594 group and required averted to glimpse.
