Corwin's Notes

===== NGC 7252 has been called the "Atoms for Peace" galaxy because of its inner region's vague resemblance to the symbol adopted by a 1955 conference in Geneva. See the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atoms_for_Peace for more information on the conference; and see e.g. Schweizer, ApJ 252, 455, 1982 for more on the galaxy itself. It appears to be the result of a recent merger of two galaxies -- the existence of extensive thin plumes to the northwest and east, as well as the loops leading to the "Atoms for Peace" name, suggest the merger.

Steve's Notes
