Corwin's Notes

===== NGC 6344 is a double star at Lohse's position. In appearance, it matches several other of the "nebulae" found by him with the 15.5-inch (e.g. NGC 5884, also a double star, which see), and is very close to his nominal position. There is a faint galaxy -- the SDSS shows it to actually be a "nest" of at least four galaxies -- about an arcminute to the north that has been taken as N6344, but it is certainly too faint for Lohse to have seen. Another coincidence of the field is the presence of Zwicky's cluster ZwCl 1715.5+4229 almost directly behind Lohse's stars; the quadruple system is probably its brightest member.

Steve's Notes

===== NGC 6344 17.5" (8/1/89): this is a pair of mag 12/13 stars just 1' S of PGC 60004 (misidentified as NGC 6344 in the RNGC). PGC 60004 appeared extremely faint and small, round. Located 2.1' SW of mag 8 SAO 046612!
