===== NGC 4178 also carries the number IC 3042, which see.

Steve's Notes

===== NGC 4178 17.5" (5/14/88): fairly bright, large, very elongated 3:1 SSW-NNE. Gradually increases to a small bright core and faint stellar nucleus. 17.5" (5/10/86): very large but diffuse, very elongated 3:1 SW-NE, very little central concentration but a brighter knot appears along the SW edge. Located 7.0' WNW of mag 7.6 SAO 99995.
