Corwin's Notes
=====
NGC 2457. The identity of this galaxy is not in doubt: Copeland gives a
micrometric offset from NGC 2456 for it, and it is just where he claims to
have seen it. What is interesting is his comment in the description, "About
3' north of the nova, there seemed to be another vF nebula. Telescope now at
the limit of its range." There is in fact a fainter galaxy just three arcmin
to the north of NGC 2457. Dreyer could well have included this in the NGC,
but chose not to, apparently because of Copeland's apparent uncertainty about
its existence. This makes at least three nebulae found by Copeland that are
not in NGC -- interesting since Copeland was a friend and colleague of
Dreyer's.
-----
Since I wrote that some time ago, I have created the "notngc" files to collect
all the non-stellar objects seen before the NGC was assembled but not included
in it. This neighbor of NGC 2457, which is CGCG 267-047, is discussed a bit
further in those files.

NGC 2457
17.5" (1/19/91): extremely faint, very small, round, very low surface brightness. Forms a pair with NGC 2456 5' WSW. Two extremely faint companions 1.2' E and 3' NNE were not seen.
