Corwin's Notes
=====
NGC 1742. Ball's observation on 29 December 1866 of this puts it 60 arcsec
away, in PA 65 deg, from NGC 1740. That clearly identifies the star he took
to be a "vF, vS" nebula; he called it "beta". His sketch of the field is
clear, too, once the orientation is known. All this is in Dreyer's monograph
of LdR's observations.
For the NGC, Dreyer used JH's position of NGC 1740 as a reference. Since that
is about 15 seconds of time too small, his calculated position for NGC 1742 is
also 15 seconds too small.
Had I looked at the observation decades ago when I first went over the field,
I probably would have gotten it right. As is, I've had the wrong star in the
list for all these years (sigh). Well, it's finally right.
