===== NGC 1278 = IC 1907, which see. This is not the galaxy that WH and JH saw in the Perseus Cluster -- that is NGC 1275; see that for the story. Also see NGC 1276 for which this serves as Dreyer's micrometric reference point.

Steve's Notes

===== NGC 1278 17.5" (10/24/87): fairly faint, fairly small, oval, small bright core. Located in the central core of AGC 426. Forms a close pair with NGC 1277 0.8' NW with V Zw 339 1.4' ESE. NGC 1278 is situated at the NE corner of a parallelogram with NGC 1275 3.4' SSW, NGC 1272 7.5' SW and NGC 1273 5.3' WSW. V Zw 339 appeared extremely faint and small, round. 13" (1/28/84): faint, small. Located 3.4' N of NGC 1275 and forms a close pair with NGC 1277.
