Corwin's Notes

===== NGC 553 may be CGCG 502-084. However, Wolfgang believes that galaxy lies outside of WH's field in the sweep, and suggests instead that WH's object may be a single or double star. See NGC 552 and NGC 537 for more.

Steve's Notes

===== NGC 553 17.5" (12/9/01): extremely faint, very small, round, 15" diameter (viewed core only of this faint edge-on), requires averted. A slightly brighter mag 15 star (possibly NGC 552) is 30" preceding. Located 18' ESE of NGC 517, just following the NGC 507 Group. This identification is very uncertain due to a poor position by William Herschel.
